Don't just get a "burner" SIM card, but get a "burner" phone as well. People with connections at service providers can get the IMEI number of a phone in which a SIM is used. If you use your regular phone with a burner SIM, or a burner SIM as a secondary card, they can pick up the details of your real SIM used on that IMEI number and thus trace back to you. Do not underestimate the capabilities of scammers and the desperation of underpaid call centre agents with access to information that can be dangerous in the wrong hands. It is not being paranoid, it is being realistic.
