I prefer messaging first, and if they don't reply, it's a good sign too. Interestingly, though it made sense for me to call to finalise details and to get a final "sense", I have now been on a few punts where the only communication was via whatsapp. Side note - I have been on calls where the 1st response is Rxxx for an hour, Rzzzz for 30 minutes etc, with no detail whatsoever - so calling is not always better/easier.
